Carlos H. Schenck, M.D., is the author of a recently-released, popular book titled Paradox Lost: Midnight In The Battleground Of Sleep And Dreams. He has a caseload filled with patients having conditions called Parasomnias, which encompass abnormal behaviors, perceptions, experiences, and autonomic nervous system activity during sleep or during arousals from sleep. Primitive appetites and aggressions often become unleashed and intertwined with the Parasomnias, which can affect people of all ages—even a fetus in utero. Parasomnias are surprisingly common, and can be properly diagnosed and effectively treated. Dr. Schenck has also co-produced a video-documentary in DVD format on Parasomnias titled "Sleep Runners: The Stories Behind Everyday Parasomnias." This DVD shares the stories of eight people who have spent their nights battling sleep behavior disorders. The subjects and their family members share courageous stories of self-diagnosis, their ways of coping, and their intriguing journeys of perseverance that have led them to recovery and a renewal of life, after receiving proper medical intervention. The stories include recurrent bouts of sleep-eating, sleep-driving, sleep-walking, violent dream enactments, and night terrors that often result in day-time fears and anxieties. Sleep Runners shares these stories first hand and provides insight on diagnosis and treatment from two of the pioneering doctors in the field of Parasomnias.
